Abstract We present a new protocol that allows two players to exchange digital signatures over the Internet in a fair way, so that either each player gets the other's signature, or neither player does. The obvious application is where the signatures represent items of value, for example, an electronic check or airline ticket. The protocol can also be adapted to exchange encrypted data. The protocol relies on a trusted third party, but is \optimistic," in that the third party is only needed in cases where one player attempts to cheat or simply crashes. A key feature of our protocol is that a player can always force a timely and fair termination, without the cooperation of the other player. A specialization of our protocol can be used for contract signing; this specialization is not only more eecient, but also has the important property that the third party can be held accountable for its actions: if it ever cheats, this can be detected and proven.

A traceable optimistic fair exchange protocol in the standard model

An Optimistic Fair Exchange (OFE) protocol is a good way for two parties to exchange their digital items in a fair way such that at the end of the protocol execution, both of them receive their items or none of them receive anything. In an OFE protocol there is a semi-trusted third party, named arbitrator, which involves in the protocol if it is necessary. But there is a security problem when a...

A Survey on Optimistic Fair Digital Signature Exchange Protocols

Security services become crucial to many applications such as e-commerce payment protocols, electronic contract signing, and certified e-mail delivery, with the phenomenal growth of the Internet and open networks. For these applications fair exchange must be assured. A fair protocol allows two parties to exchange digital signatures over the Internet in a fair way, so that either each party gets...

Optimistic Fair Exchange Protocol for E-Commerce

For e-commerce payments, fair exchange is one of the essential problems. The optimistic fair exchange protocol allows two parties to efficiently exchange items so that either each party gets the other’s item or neither does. We propose a new optimistic fair exchange protocol that is efficient and applicable to any digital signature scheme such as RSA or DSA. In our protocol, we introduce pre-si...

An optimistic fair exchange protocol and its security in the universal composability framework

Fair exchange protocols allow both or neither of two parties to obtain the other’s items, and this property is essential in e-commerce. In this paper, we construct an optimistic fair exchange protocol that is applicable to any digital signature by prescribing three forms of signatures, namely presignature, post-signature and notarised signature. We set an expiration date for presignature, and t...

Perfect Ambiguous Optimistic Fair Exchange

Protocol for fair exchange of digital signatures is essential in many applications including contract signing, electronic commerce, or even peer-to-peer file sharing. In such a protocol, two parties, Alice and Bob, would like to exchange digital signatures on some messages in a fair way. It is known that a trusted arbitrator is necessary in the realization

Threshold-Oriented Optimistic Fair Exchange

Fair exchange protocol aims to allow two parties to exchange digital items in a fair manner. It is well-known that fairness can only be achieved with the help of a trusted third party, usually referred to as arbitrator. A fair exchange protocol is optimistic if the arbitrator is not involved in the normal execution of the fair exchange process. That is, its presence is necessary only when one o...
